Ramadan Kareem: A Culinary walk through Bohri Mohalla

Ramadan Kareem to those who observe this holy month of fasting.   My recent blog feed has some fabulous  posts that were a visual delight as many  fellow bloggers have been posting for Ramadan. Some focussing on various street eats, special hotel buffets and tents while others cooking up a storm in their kitchens. One such post on Facebook brought back recollections of a fantastic experience from last year. Mumbai has an eclectic and vibrant neighbourhood that comes alive around Ramadan every year. These  by-lanes  of Mohammad Ali Road,Bhendi bazaar and Bohri Mohalla are  abuzz with food vendors and street stalls. This is perhaps one of Mumbai’s oldest and significantly iconic neighbourhood’s that reverberates fervent activity at sundown and can quite rightly  be named the old Muslim quarter.Wandering down these lanes can turn into a delightful experience for the senses as one revels in the array of street food  and small eateries that serve up some finger licking good food.

Oven Grilled Chicken with Potatoes and Vegetables

How’s the summer treating you? Kind and cool I hope….While I prefer the heat over cold wintry days any day, the summer month’s here in Mumbai have been sweltering hot.Perhaps most of you would agree that the last thing on one’s mind is cooking in the heat. Well the dear son is here on his holidays from Montreal and  yes I’ve been pampering him with his favourite meals. He often hear’s me complain about the heat and of course the eternal debate on what to cook for dinner!  I for one have been trying to simply meal times at home. At least the dinner’s. A couple of posts ago I wrote about focussing on easy and fuss free cooking ideas. This dinner idea is just that.A oven grilled boneless chicken accompanied with the starchy goodness of some Hasselback Potatoes and a healthful serving of  pan charred Zucchini and carrots. Well balanced, nutritious and gets done in just about 30 minutes.Yes that’s my new kitchen mantra.Well for the summer’s at least. So how’s that for an ultra quick and …

Achari Aloo: Potatoes cooked in Pickling Spices

Food Like A Loving Touch Or A Glimpse Of Divine Power Has The Ability To Comfort…   Let’s say we all have our Comfort foods.I for one crave a simple meal especially after a busy day at work, perhaps when I’m low and even especially after travelling and being away from home for awhile. It also has a lot to do with the kind of flavours one grew up on.I spent a large part of my childhood with my grandparents. My grandmother was a great cook and while meat and fish dishes were a regular  at the dinner table, she cooked a variety of vegetarian meals as well. And yes potatoes were always the family favourite. She would often make potatoes with onions and spices and this was very often made it to our lunch boxes..There are certain flavour’s that linger on and taste just like childhood.Well here is a recipe that reminds me of my grand mom’s cooking, and curiously enough, instantly transports me back  to her kitchen.Well of course food that is linked to childhood nostalgia often brings on a cooking …

Vallonne Vineyards: There’s Always Time For A Glass of Wine

I’ve been contemplating a blog post on some quick getaway’s from Mumbai as Jd and I are quite the “Let’s just drive off for the weekend sort of folks”.  While I’m still in the process of  collating  the information and editing images,(as I’d like to add on a couple of good weekend destinations),I thought I may as well go ahead with the Vineyard tour that we explored recently. We decided to visit the Vallonne Vineyards on this trip.Nestled amongst the gorgeous Sahyadri slopes of Maharashtra,Vallonne Vineyard’s is a  premium boutique winery and  a great place to drive off to and unwind. The drive  is approximately 160 kms by road from Mumbai and just south of Nasik, the Wine capital of India. Yes indeed, Nasik is a premium wine growing region playing host to some well branded wineries.Indian wines have certainly evolved in the past decade or so and this region can quite easily be coined as India’s Napa Valley. Vallonne is definitely one to keep an eye on.This premium boutique winery aims at  bringing the “French Chateau” …

Thai Red Curry with Shrimp: 30 Minute Meal

My blog seems to be forming a pattern ,or so I think. I tend to write-up a post that takes you on a food journey of sorts, perhaps a culinary trail,a visit to an exotic land coupled with a food demo and a recipe. These posts are then followed by a tried and tested recipe that I  have experimented with in my kitchen.Well I quite like this format as it gives the reader a variety and my aim of course is to take you down some parts unknown with a guide to some unique culinary attractions. Now there is a section that I had been meaning to start off for sometime now and well here it is.I want to add-on some fuss free, easy to cook up,ready in 30 minute meals that have less prep time and aim at making weeknight less stressful for all of us.So here we go with the first of the recipes. This is my to go Curry in a hurry for times where the family is craving a good quick fix Asian delight. It is …
